It has tons of information. Easy to read for any college student without all the rubbish information you will not need.Excellent images, diagrams, and timelines. The index could use some work but that's not a big issue.

For a class.

Needed it for a class. Usually I just borrow books from the school's library, but once I opened the book I knew I wasn't going to be able to scan this easily. There is so much information everywhere but it's easy to follow. If you are a visual person, you will probably enjoy this textbook because it's colorful and filled with images and graphs. Great to have for reference!

Excellent.

I feel that one of the goals of this text is to get students thinking about data interpretation. It encourages them to use critical thinking when reading competing theories of our evolution. As a whole I like this text. I have used for my classes for years. I do not always agree with all the details presented, but I feel it gives me an opportunity to present alternative views. This title is very clear and very up-to-date. New additions come out regularly with updates on new fossils and theories. I would recommend this to other instructors looking for a college level text for adoption.

Well-written, well-organized, and informative. I purchased this as a textbook for a college course, but I really appreciated the content as well.

I had to get this book for a class I'm taking. So far it's very interesting. I'm glad this particular edition is still available for students.

It’s perfect... it’s exactly what I needed for my anthropology class.

I'm not going to bother reviewing the content itself. It's the Bible, after all. As far as the translation is concerned, it is the New American Bible - the complete Catholic Bible, in an approved Catholic translation. So the target audience is, of course, Catholics. With something this big, you have to have a good way to navigate, and this ebook delivers. If you know the correct abbreviations, which are pretty intuitive, it's as easy as typing mt 1 5 in the search bar, selecting "Index Items" and clicking on the first result, and you'll go straight to Matthew, Chapter 1, Verse 5. Click a superscript letter and you'll jump to a list of cross-references to other Bible verses. Click an asterisk and you'll go to the notes associated with a verse or word. Then just hit the back button to go back to where you were.

The content of the Bible in this Kindle version is just what you would expect it to be. Navigating to the book, chapter, and verse of interest is far from ideal. I bought this Kindle book back in 2012 when I had a Kindle reader with the keyboard. The directions on how to search for content in the book using the Kindle keyboard worked as described. It was not ideal in that you had to remember the abbreviation for the book and Alt key presses to enter the numbers of the chapter and the verse, but it worked.Recently this Kindle with the keyboard died and I replaced it with a current Kindle Paperwhite which does not have the physical keyboard but has the on screen keyboard. Although there are directions in the book on how to do the searching using a Kindle Touch, these directions have not worked for me with the Paperwhite. What has worked is to navigate to the Table of Contents and bookmark(highlight) that page. I can use this bookmark to quickly bring up the Table of Contents. A few screen swipes brings me to the book of interest. Click on the book title to bring up the chapters. Click on the chapter number to bring it up, and then with a few screen swipes to bring up the verse of interest.Consideration should be given to updating the navigation system designed into this book to work better with today's readers. With an improved navigation system, I would give this book 5 stars.

Bible: New American Bible, Revised Edition 2011 I am very happy with this Bible. At first I was concerned that the notes and commentaries would make it hard to read (another version I tried had the notes inserted in the text itself which was confusing and inconvenient). However, it is not the case with this one. This Bible looks like the regular text, yet all the additional material is easily and conveniently accessible through hyperlinks. Following the publisher's directions, I've learned to find any verse in the matter of seconds, which is very useful. Overall, this is an excellent buy.

I'm not going to comment on the content. Either you want to read it, or you don't. I see no reason to quibble with the translators' biases or take issue with the social positions of the Roman Catholic Church. What I appreciate about this bible is that the translation methodology is described. Each section of the bible and each book has an introduction describing the historical place of the book, whether it's considered historically accurate or an allegory, and how the book was modified over time before becoming part of the canon. Some of the language seems a little too informal to me, but I'm willing to overlook that because I really appreciate the commentary and notes. It's fairly easy to navigate on the Kindle. I almost gave it five stars, but the navigation is not perfect.

It's the New American Bible, so the translation is fine. I've knocked off two stars for the usability. It seems like it was designed for an earlier form of the Kindle, so it doesn't navigate as nicely as other books that I have. That said, I really enjoy having this translation on my Kindle, especially when I'm travelling.First, I can't search for a specific verse (e.g. Jn 10:10). The book has instructions for how to do it, but they don't work.Second, access to the endnotes is sub-par. First, they jump you all the way to the back of the book, rather than just appearing in page. Then, the return function brings you back with that verse at the top of the Kindle, rather than on the previous screen. If I get my Kindle set up nicely for Bible study with the whole section on the screen, clicking any of these notes messes it up.

I like it. I started with the Gospel according to St. John because it was Easter time when I downloaded it and I wanted to compare the differences between John's story and the other gospels. The sermon on Sunday recently had a mention about the contrast between the "writers" and it was fascinating. Go, Father Stan! But I digress. Back to the book: I like the way there are footnotes and if you click on a little number by a sentence, then you go to the footnote, and then can go back and continue reading. It took me a while to figure out how to get back, since it did not occur to me to just hit the back button on the Kindle Fire (1st generation), so I got lost a few times by going from footnote to footnote. And you have to be careful while you are reading. You touch the page on the right side to page forward to the next page (that is usual in the Kindle Fire) and if you are not careful and there is a footnote number where you touch, then it can catapult you into a footnote page. I also wanted to read the story of Joseph the Dreamer, since I had just watched the Technicolor Dreamcoat by Andrew Lloyd Webber but I could not find it in the Old Testament - I am a new testament woman. So I went back to the Acts, and lo and behold! (hah! Angel humor!) There was a reference to Joseph. I am still reading that one, right before Stephen is martyred. Maybe a footnote will lead me to the dreamer's page. After I give due attention to Stephen, of course. Can't disrespect a martyr. It's a good book, no pun intended. I intend to keep reading, but I am not sure I will wade through the O.T. After I finish the N.T. then I will perhaps bounce around via footnotes and references. Cool!

Forge. Anderson, Laurie Halse (Author) Oct 2010. 304 p. Atheneum, hardcover, $16.99. (9781416961444). Anderson follows her searing, multi-award-winning novel Chains (2008) with this well-researched sequel, also set during the Revolutionary War and narrated by a young African American. This time, though, her central character is male, and the heartbreaking drama shifts from Chains' domestic town houses to graphically described bloody battlefields. After a narrowly successful escape from Manhattan, former slaves Isabel and Curzon separate, and Curzon is once again on the run. He finds necessary food and shelter as a private with the Continental army, and through Curzon's eyes, Anderson re-creates pivotal historical scenes, including the desperate conditions at Valley Forge. After an argument with Isabel about where they should go next, the 15-year-old battles the British at Saratoga and winters in Valley Forge with the Patriots. He reveals many details of the conditions endured by the soldiers during the winter of 1777-1778, including the limited food supply, lack of adequate shelter, and tattered clothing. When Curzon and Isabel meet again, they have both been captured and must devise a plan of escape once again. While the Patriots are fighting for the freedom of a country, these young people must fight for their personal freedom. Months later, Curzon is doing his best to forget Isabel, though the depth of his feelings is made evident in flashbacks of their time together. After Curzon saves the life of Eben, a young rebel soldier, he joins the army and suffers through the winter at Valley Forge; tension mounts when Curzon's former owner arrives. Anderson includes meticulous details about the lives of soldiers and, with just a few words, brings readers deep inside Curzon's experience ("My belly voted louder than my wits"). Her masterful storytelling weaves themes of friendship, politics, love, and liberty into a deeply satisfying tale that will leave readers hungry for the final volume. - "PW, "September 13, 2010, *STARForgeby Laurie Halse Anderson, *STAR"Forge" is the sequel to "Chains" (2008), but it can be read independently. Anderson has done her research and accurately portrays the horrors of serving in the first Continental Army at Valley Forge. The story within is of slavery in a fledgling nation; the freedom that the founding fathers were fighting for did not extend to their slaves. The hero of the story, Curzon, has already served in the army, but in trying to get away from a cruel master, he is re-enlisted. When his former master reappears, his friends from his squad help him escape, along with Isabel, the heroine of "Chains". The book contains an appendix with glossary, further readings, and Q&A about the historical background and primary sources used. Each chapter begins with a quote pertaining to the war or slavery. While the details are accurate, the book is not gratuitously violent. Curzon is an empathetic character to whom most young people will relate. At the end, when Curzon and Isabel escape, the reader can only hope that all will end well in the next book. The book introduced young people to an important --- and often overlooked --- chapter in American history, as Anderson told the story of the dawn of the American Revolution through the eyes of a young slave girl. Anderson now continues this work in FORGE, the second book of what will eventually be a trilogy. Here the narrative shifts gears from Isabel to her friend Curzon, a fellow runaway who becomes separated from Isabel but finds safety --- of a sort --- when he enlists as a soldier fighting on the American side during the Revolutionary War. As one of the few black soldiers, he is disrespected --- and worse --- by some of his peers and his officers. With his customary courage, hard work and loyalty, however, Curzon gains the respect and even the friendship of many of his fellow soldiers. All the young men's fortitude is brutally tested, however, when they are told to report to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, during the winter of 1777 and 1778. As Curzon and his comrades struggle just to survive, Anderson vividly brings to life the horrifying details of life in Valley Forge, unflinchingly documenting the hardships that most high school history books just gloss over. From surviving days without food to digging trenches in frozen ground to trudging through snowdrifts in just a pair of wet, stinking socks, Curzon's story, and that of all the men, will both repulse readers and remind them of the soldiers' remarkable fortitude and bravery. Besides being a compelling, unfailingly realistic account of the winter at Valley Forge, though, FORGE's story also serves as a powerful metaphor:Anderson, Laurie Halse Forge. Atheneum, 2010 [304p] (Seeds of America) ISBN 978-1-4169-6144-4 $16.99 Reviewed from galleys R Gr. 7-10 Curzon and Isabel, runaway slaves in Anderson's Chains (BCCB 11/08), have parted company--she is headed south to find her sister Ruth, and he finds work driving a cart for Patriot soldiers. An impulsive act of battlefield bravery leads to Curzon's enlistment as a freeman with the 16th Massachusetts Regiment, and he's now a tentmate with Eban Woodruff, the young man whose life he saved, and John Burns, a sly bigot who waits for an opportunity to drum Curzon out of the army. Personal animosity simmers as the soldiers encamp at Valley Forge for the winter of 1777-8, but Curzon and his comrades cooperate to make the best of dire circumstances. When Burns rises to the rank of sergeant, though, and Curzon's legal owner, James Bellingham, reclaims his service, Curzon begins to plot yet another escape. His situation is immediately complicated by the appearance of Isabel, who has been recaptured and sold to Bellingham. Bellingham knows Curzon will withhold his labor, so he threatens to punish Isabel, who already wears a locked metal cuff around her neck, for each infraction he may cause. Desperate but unable to plan a foolproof escape, Curzon and Isabel are blessed by chance and the unexpected aid of Curzon's old comrades at arms with some slim hope of freedom as the novel ends and they march out of Valley Forge, protectively surrounded by decamping troops. The saga that began as Isabel's tale loses none of its tension as it switches to Curzon's plight, and the pair's situation at the novel's conclusion is precarious enough to suggest--even demand--another volume. Again Anderson crafts her source notes into a reader-friendly Q&A discussion and appends a glossary of eighteenth-century terms. As one of Curzon's mates observes, "This camp is a forge for the army; it's testing our qualities. . . . Question is, what are we made of?" Fork

The wolves terrified him. Curzon scrambled down the ravine, thinking about the bodies that the beasts had dug from their graves after the battle at Freeman’s Farm. An escaped slave like him didn’t stand a chance if they’d caught his scent. Gunfire blasted into the glade. Musketballs peppered the trees, nearly ripping his ear. Curzon threw himself to the ground, hoping no British or rebel fire would strike him. When the smoke cleared, a young rebel was staring down the barrel of a British soldier. Curzon hurled a rock at the redcoat and struck him hard in his shoulder. Seizing his chance, the rebel fired. His enemy screamed as blood spurted over dead leaves. The shaken rebel soon prepared to rejoin his comrades, and Curzon was off with him to the thick of the battle—fighting for the freedom of the men who had enslaved him.Valley Forge. Curzon found himself serving in the army as a freeman, without papers to prove he wasn’t a slave. The cold of deep winter set in, freezing the feet of any soldier left without boots. Icy winds swept through the camp on nights too cold for pitching tents. All the barrels of salt pork spoiled. With nothing to eat but handfuls of flour, starvation chewed through the rebel army. Veteran soldiers poured muddy water and crushed grain over heated rocks to make scorched firecakes. Little choice for food remained, other than stealing pumpkins from surrounding farms.Trapped in a world of hunger, freezing weather, and vicious assaults from his own comrades, Curzon missed his friend Isabel fiercely. She had been the one to free him from Bridewell Prison, rowing all night with bleeding hands to save his life. One cold day, Curzon’s former master rode into camp. When their eyes met, past and future caught in one life-changing moment. Freedom and slavery exchanged places. Curzon’s world was about to begin over again. Isabel was alive, but collared in iron, making another escape all but impossible.Laurie Halse Anderson writes dramatic history that quickly captures your heart. She is a New York Times bestselling author. She’s won numerous awards and honors, including two National Book Award nominations, the Margaret A Awards Award, and the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents Award.

I bought this book because my daughter's class at school is reading it and I wanted to check it out & make sure it was suitable for a youngster to read.I read the whole thing in one sitting, couldn't put it down, and it made me cry. There was no inappropriate/adult content.Definitely a great read, and I would recommend it for adolescent reading material for learning about the revolutionary war.I started reading the second book, Forge, and am not as into it, haven't finished it...I just want to skip ahead to the third book which isn't written yet, I if understand correctly.

Forge is narrated by Curzon. The pace of action is nicely sprinkled with Curzon's recollections of his separation from Isabel after she rescued him. We also learn more about his past and how he came to be Bellingham's slave. His resourcefulness and wise judgement of character once again guide him on his path, which ultimately leads once again to Isabel.

My 13-year old had to read the prequel to this for 8th grade Reading, and so I read both this book and the prequel. They both are fascinating and I could not put them down! I have also read another of Anderson's books "Fever 1892" and that was also captivating. I have to say my daughter did not read this book, or even finish the prequel, and she did not like Fever because of the descriptions of people with serious illness. She is a big reader but historical fiction is not her thing (yet!). I hope to get her interested enough to finish them both. I hope Ms Anderson keeps writing because I will keep reading!

I know that this is the second in a series of three books by Laurie Halsey Anderson. I'd read the first "Chains" while inpatient for a medical treatment. It had been provided by the shelves of the sharing rooms library. For where I've been myself I'm not sure of what I'd thought that it been recommended for reading levels as young as high school junior years. When I was from the SouthWest as teenage we'd hardly been told any truths about the NorthEast territories during the Revolutionary war. But although mainly fiction except for some quotes posted before the chapters, I'm trying to learn a little about the NorthEast lands original histories. With my lengthlento the second book though actually, about four chapters, I'm wondering if Curzon will come back up alive. He was not awake when the boat met coast, still bruised from the foul conditions of rebel prison and used to starving which I hope saves his life and he waked up later.

The second part of the trilogy that starts with the book Chains. Well researched history. I used it as a read aloud and used some sections for close reading with my 5th grade class. Before sharing it with my class, I couldn't put it down. I myself learned a lot about the American Revolution, and it was refreshing to hear history from the viewpoint of marginalized people, whose voices are generally not represented. I can't wait for part 3- Ashes.

Not only is this a great piece of historical fiction, but it offers a unique first-person experience of a young man who was formerly a slave and now a freeman fighting with the rebel army. Of course, that does not exempt him from tragedy and abuse beyond even the appalling experiences of soldiers at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777-78. It’s also uplifting to see the good fortune and friendship that help overcome these obstacles.

I'm really enjoying this series. It is a quick read, I'm learning about a period of history I know little about and the characters are enjoyable and realistic. At first I thought I'd be sad that this book switches perspective but actually I enjoyed it very much. On to book three.

Beautiful pictures. Some of the outdoor scenery ones could have been anywhere in cold country, however. A little more text would have been nice. As there are not many picture books from this region, I am very happy with purchase and would buy again

Gave this book to our French son-in-law who will be visiting Quebec with his family this summer. He's very much into photography as well as learning about Quebec. It was an excellent choice. More pictures than text.

Nice quality

What a beautiful book that showcases the MOST beautiful province in Canada.

The book gave a very in-depth summary of the Quebec Province and especially the towns.

If you have ever been to Canada - one thing which strikes clearly is that each province is uniquely different and there is something about Quebec which is strikingly different from other states.- Beautiful scenery- A very European feeling in cities ...This book does an amazing job of capturing pictures of the beautiful Quebec province - it is not just pictures, but also some really nice words and description by the author - it can be a great coffee table book which anyone would pick up

This book is the best book of photographs I've ever seen yet. They are all big, and beautiful and practically every page is taken up with an entire photo or part of a photo, with well-written, almost poetic, descriptions. I can spend a lot of time just thumbing through and looking at all the incredibly beautiful landscapes, seascapes, and mountainscapes, etc...all in full, vivid color. I've never been to Quebec, and have yet to visit Canada and this book has me really wanting to see some of these places for myself.Of course all the photos are of beautiful places and we all know there are some not-so-beautiful places in every area, so I keep my opinion of the picturesque-ness of Quebec grounded in reality, but it makes me wish all the planet was this beautiful, all the time. The book itself contains high-quality semi-gloss paper, and is big - I'm estimating 10" square and nearly 1" thick with lots of photos, some taking up 2 full pages entirely. And it's got that "new book" smell for those who like that. I feel very fortunate to have received this book for review and I am taking notes on what I see and will try and visit in the near future.

Sometimes you really can judge a book by its cover — Québec: A Photographic Road Trip Through Canada's Beautiful Province is an utterly beautiful compilation of photography by Mathieu Dupuis. Interestingly, the author’s bio highlights his impressive photography career. However, the eye candy in the book is not reserved solely for the reader’s eyes. Mr. Dupuis’ personal travel diaries, essays and editorial copy are also a titillating journey for the mind’s eye as well as the other senses. What follows is only one example of the editorial candy penned by the author.“The echo of tribal chants from a powwow float across the river to our ears. We are wide-eyed and speechless. It is as if we’ve traveled back in time. A single moment of genuine adventure sends shivers up our spine with every stroke of the paddle. These moments of rare authenticity nearly erase from memory the thousands of miles traveled on isolated roads. The journey has not always been a pleasure outing. The ever present threat of a mechanical failure or other event in these larger-than-life regions hovers perpetually at the back of one’s mind. But for those daring to brave the north, the adventure will remain unforgettable.”I would define Dupuis’ wordsmith wizardry throughout the book as wanderlust poetry. What impresses me most is the juxtaposition between his soulful insights, and his factual travel writing coupled with suggested itineraries. The marriage works so well, in fact, I am considering incorporating this technique into the current update of Consummate Connecticut: Day Trips with Panache, my own travel guidebook, the most comprehensive day trip book written about Connecticut, which is currently out of print. In the interim, I am not only proud to display, Québec: A Photographic Road Trip Through Canada's Beautiful Province, on my coffee table, but taking notes for my future adventure to the stunning Canadian region that Mr. Dupuis has inspired me to embark on.

Since I know the author I am of course biased in his favor. But as he makes (favorable) mention of me in the book that gives him top rating of 5 stars.Actually, it's a darn fine book. I've been reading mountaineering literature for quite some time now and am struck by evolution of style over the years. Books of the 1920s and 30s now seem "detached." We learn from them what people DID, but not a lot about who the people WERE. (Tilman is a great and welcome exception.) Through his humor--often self-deprecating--Clinch's story makes it plain that mountaineers can accomplish great things while still enjoying themselves. Probably as a reflection of what the publishers know will sell, more recent books (and especially TV movies and the like) place so much emphasis on danger, harum-scarum and disaster that a general reader (who can't see between the lines) must get a very peculiar slant on climbing.Read it!

This exciting book tells about the difficulties of organizing an expedition, and the expedition itself. It is a well written page turner for everyone, but especially for those with an interest in adventure, and the amazing fortitude of those attempting unclimbed, sky high peaks. PH

It was refreshing to read a good story of the first ascent of Hidden Peak in 1958. This was before the Himalayas were deluged by eco-tourists and before numerous sensationalist accounts of conquest written or filmed. Here is a story of some American mountaineers scraping together an expedition to enjyoy a climb of an 8,000 meter peak. How much better can it get? Perhaps the author "sanitized" the account since it is devoid of personality and ego conflicts. Everyone in the book is a happy camper: sahibs, HAPs and porters.

This book surprised me. It's a pearl. I judge mountaineering books by how many thoughtful quotations I can glean from the pages on a variety of topics and insights. It's a nice title, the walking, but I liked the talking. Here is an example:"Expeditions are born in the minds of men and more of them die there than are defeated by avalanches, bad weather, and misfortune combined." Nicholas Clinch.

From the Inside Flap

Full of mischief, valor, ribaldry, and romance, The Arabian Nights has enthralled readers for centuries. These are the tales that saved the life of Shahrazad, whose husband, the king, executed each of his wives after a single night of marriage. Beginning an enchanting story each evening, Shahrazad always withheld the ending: A thousand and one nights later, her life was spared forever. This volume reproduces the 1932 Modern Library edition, for which Bennett A. Cerf chose the most famous and representative stories from Sir Richard F. Burton's multivolume translation, and includes Burton's extensive and acclaimed explanatory notes. These tales, including Alaeddin; or, the Wonderful Lamp, Sinbad the Seaman and Sinbad the Landsman, and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, have entered into the popular imagination, demonstrating that Shahrazad's spell remains unbroken. "From the Trade Paperback edition.

The cover is incredibly intricate and beautiful. The pages are gold dipped but seem to be prone to flaking. It has a satin marker and many illustrations in color and black and white. Rene Bull's illustrations have a surreal, trippy, almost sci-fi feel, somewhat similar to Frank Frazetta. The Alfred W. Cooper ones are nice and more natural but do sort of clash with Bull's funky style. This book also contains story-specific headers, which is always convenient and drifting page numbers that follow a faint design from the top of the page at the beginning to the bottom by the end.It is worth noting that this translation was done by Sir Richard F. Burton (an interesting character) in 1884 and has a stylish but definitely dated vocabulary as would be expected, so if you cannot tolerate Thous and Quoths and Haths this is not the translation for you. Personally I enjoy the dated language because it gives the work a proper amount of foreigness from the present that enhances the stories' historical weight. It also might matter for some people that this is definitely a post-Islamic Arabic rendering/sourcing of these stories which most likely had diverse origins from all over Persia, India, and even China well before the birth of Islam. The effect of this is something like the Christian influence on texts such as Beowulf where the story isn't so much corrupted as obviously interspersed with overhanded religious injections and alterations that stand out against the core story quite obviously/oddly at times. The only other translation of these tales I have read contained zero Islamic references--whether that was intentional or based on their source material I cannot say. This excerpt from my other translation is far more consistent and fable-like:The porter, who had often heard people speak of the immense wealth of Sindbad, could not help feeling envious of one whose lot seemed to be as happy as his own was miserable."Consider, Mighty creator of all things, the differences between Sindbad's life and mine. Every day I suffer a thousand hardships and misfortunes, and have hard work to get even enough bad barley bread to keep myself and my family alive, while the lucky Sindbad spends money right and left and lives upon the fat of the land! What has he done that you should give him this pleasant life--what have I done to deserve so hard a fate?"Whereas the same section from Burton's seems completely over-the-top and ham-fistedly repetitious:So he raised his eyes heavenwards and said, "Glory to Thee, O Lord, O Creator and Provider, who providest whomso Thou wilt without count or stint! O mine Holy One, I cry Thee pardon for all sins and turn to Thee repenting of all offenses! O Lord there is no gainsaying Thee in Thine ordinance and in Thy dominion, neither wilt Thou be questioned of that Thou dost, for Thou indeed over all things art Almighty! Extolled be Thy perfection: whom Thou wilt Thou makest poor and whom Thou wilt Thou makest rich! Whom Thou wilt Thou exaltest and whom Thou wilt Thou abasest and there is no god but Thou! How mighty is Thy majesty and how enduring Thy dominion and how excellent Thy government! Verily Thou favorest whom Thou wilt of Thy servants, whereby the owner of this place abideth in all joyance of life and delighteth himself with pleasant scents and delicious meats and exquisite wines of all kinds. For indeed Thou appointest unto Thy creatures that which Thou wilt and that which Thou has foreordained unto them; wherefore are some weary and others are at rest and some enjoy fair fortune and affluence, whilst others suffer the extreme of travail and misery, even as I do." And he fell to reciting:"How many by my labours, that evermore endureAll goods of life enjoy and in cooly shade recline? Each morn that dawns I wake in travail and in woeAnd strange is my condition and my burden gars me pine:Many others are in luck and from miseries are free,And fortune never loads them with loads the like o' mine:They live their happy days in all solace and delight,Eat drink and dwell in honour 'mid the noble and the digne:All living things were made of a little drop of sperm,Thine origin is mine and my provenance is thine:Yet the difference and the distance 'twixt the twain of us are farAs the difference of savour of vinegar and wineBut at Thee, O God All-wise! I venture not to railWhose ordinance is just and whose justice cannot fail."It seems to me that the entirety of the ridiculous 'Glory to Thee...' bit, and possibly the final two lines of the verse, were shoehorned in because they betray the narrative's clear message and read like speedbumps to the sense of the story. The core of the story is that a porter living a lowly life smells sweet smells and hears enchanting music and feels envious about the opulence of Sindbad's lifestyle, and further assumes that it was bitter fate or chance alone that led to their disparity in success. This simple theme is hijacked with incongruent religious outpouring that essentially attempts to eliminate or invalidate the porter's feeling of envy entirely and preemptively, because the editor seems to have confused the emotion of envy with a blasphemy against Allah's divine Will, and worked excessively to correct this 'error'. However, without the porter's commonplace envy and self-pity the narrative structure collapses, because it is precisely the porter's ignorant assumption and pining that Sindbad hadn't earned his wealth which prompts Sindbad to relate the tales of his voyages and the many hardships he endured. You cannot reconcile even a single aspect of the Sindbad opening if the lowly man understands, from the outset, that Allah's Will is perfect and that there is nothing to bemoan in the disparity between himself and Sindbad--it voids the logic of the entire narrative premise.

There are at least two different versions of this book with the same covers. One is the 2006 version the other is the 2016 version. The difference can be seen in a few different areas. The most noticeable is the inside cover art is much different as are is the illustrations inside. The 2006 version also has Arabic writing on the front and back cover. The 2016 replaces that writing with stylized loops and swirls. I guess for the 2016 version they wanted to avoid any controversy that having a book about Arabia with Arabic writing on the cover might cause. The big difference with the illustrations is the 2006 version has very risqué and what could be considered racist pictures, though totally accurate to the details in the story. The 2016 version has illustrations that different events in the book that are very tame and mostly unimportant to the plot. The editors really really changed the illustrations and it was clearly to be more PC despite the fact that this book is absolutely not PC. This book has very sexist, racist, and bigoted views of everyone not of high standing in the Arabic world of the time. The descriptions are very vivid and the pictures in the old version accurately depict what the text describes. The biggest difference is the addition and omission of different stories in each version. I originally received the 2016 version and had read almost half of it before accidentally water damaging the book to the point where it didn't shut all the way. So I ordered another copy and received the 2006 version. I immediately noticed the different illustrations and then noticed they have different stories in each. For the most part the text is exactly the same, word for word, page for page with the exception of the 7th voyage of Sinbad where the 2016 version adds three pages of an 8th voyage that wasn't really a voyage and did nothing to add to the story (so I'm not sure why that was added) and that finished with him calling it the 7th voyage (weird). There are about three different places where different stories were used.So I am currently reading the stories from the old version that weren't in the new version. The old version's alternate stories were better in my opinion, however they're all very engaging (once you get used to the racist, sexist, and bigoted storytelling of the time, region, and author.

Buyers BEWARE!!!, this is not the complete 1001 Arabian Nights, but only a few stories. To better appreciate this masterpiece of literature you need to read the whole thing. The complete version, also translated by Richerd Burton is a 16 volume edition. Yes 16 books just like this one, so you are missing a lot by buying this book, which is only a collectors piece.

The version I received does not have any illustrations at all. I was mistaken by looking at some of other reviews that had photos of the book showing pictures.

This is a worthless edition, because it includes none of Burton's footnotes. Not a single one! Huge disappointment. I relied on a 5-star comment above, which said the footnotes are printed on the bottom of each page, but obviously the reviewer is talking of a completely different edition.

Magnificent. The original with the footnotes added at the end. would rather they have been like footnotes at the bottom of the page. Not the edition to read to the kids unless you are a free thinker who wants to explain it all. Burton was not a PC personage and the stories are ribald.

Nice books as advertised; 5 stars for that! My one HUGE concern is with the inordinate amount of plastic wrap around each book, and then all three were wrapped excessively again. The cardboard box that they came in was filled with this stuff once unwrapped. I love my books, and will pay top dollar for them, and understand completely how people want them protected, BUT, one can use recycled paper to cushion these things and then the planet will be served better.
